Spencer, Herbert, engl. Philosoph und sozial-polit. Schriftsteller, geb. 27. April 1820 zu Derby, lebte in London, gest. 8. Dez. 1903 in Brighton; entwickelte ein System der philos. Wissenschaften auf der Grundlage der Evolutionstheorie in: »A system of synthetic philosophy«, von dem folgende Teile erschienen: »The principles of biology« (1864-67; deutsch 1876-77). »Psychology« (1870-72; deutsch 1882-86), »Sociology« (1876-79; deutsch 1877 fg.), »Ethics« (1879 fg.; deutsch 1879 fg.). Außerdem schrieb er: »The study of sociology« (1873; deutsch, 2. Aufl. 1896); »Autobiographie« (deutsch 1905). – Vgl. Michelet (1882), Kindermann (1888), Hudson (1894), Gaupp (2. Aufl. 1900).
